Konkan Rly, Reliance to use Wind River OS

Bangalore , March 17

WIND River, a device software optimisation firm, announced on Wednesday that its operating system VxWorks would be used by the Konkan Railway in its anti-collision device (ACD) and by Reliance to power its set-top boxes.

Mr Ajit Edlabadkar, Wind River's Country Manager for India, said VxWorks had already been used in many safety critical applications worldwide.

The ACD, being developed by Konkar Railway, is an electronic control system, designed and engineered to prevent all variables of collisions, which normally occur in any railway system.

It is supported by VxWorks operating system, which handles various functions to co-ordinate the task activity, provides self-diagnostics for fault detection and supports the inter-task communication and synchronisation among these multiple activities.

Mr Edlabadkar also said that Reliance has also selected VxWorks for STBs, which would be provided to users subscribing to their service of providing cable and Internet services. The box comes with a range of value-added services meant for Indian subscribers.

He also announced Wind River's global plans to intensify its foray into embedded Linux through a partnership with Red Hat.
