New Delhi , March 17

THE Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) will issue guidelines for the Internet and broadband sector in the next fortnight, the TRAI Chairman, Mr Pradip Baijal, said today.

The telecom regulator has already removed the artificial barriers between WLL (Wireless in Local Loop) and GSM (Global System for Mobile) technologies by ushering in a unified licence regime.

Internet and broadband will be the next step in keeping with the telecom industry moving in the direction of unified access using different technologies, Mr Baijal said.

Justifying the Government's decision to let the TRAI regulate the cable television industry, he said that television and telecom networks would eventually converge on a single platform. The cable TV, with an audience of 55 million, was a strong medium, he pointed out.

Mr Baijal was speaking at a pre-conference session of Convergence India 2004, an annual exhibition and conference on information technology (IT) and broadband that opens in the Capital tomorrow.

The three-day event will focus on the business opportunities and latest technological developments in the converging IT, telecom and entertainment industries, according to a press release issued by the organisers, Exhibitions India Ltd, here.
