Events Commonwealth Travel Mart begins today Our Bureau
Mumbai , March 17 THIRTY nations, including India, will participate in the inaugural Commonwealth Travel Mart (CTM) 2004 to be held in Kuala Lumpur between March 18 and 21. According to an official statement, the travel mart will be held in conjunction with the Commonwealth Tourism Ministers' Conference, (CTMC) to be held from March 19 to 21. The Commonwealth business forum and senior officials' meeting are the supporting components of the conference. Ms Rashmi Verma, Additional Director-General and Mr Amitabh Kant, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Tourism, will represent the Government of India at the travel mart. During the meeting, Malaysia is expected to propose the setting of a Commonwealth Tourism Centre in Kuala Lumpur According to the statement, organisation of the travel mart alongside the ministerial meeting would enable participants to address the theme, namely, `Promoting Intra-Commonwealth Tourism'. The CTM is being organised with the objective of promoting tourism within the Commonwealth and will aim at fostering better relationships among member countries in the tourism industry and among the people of the Commonwealth.
The statement, quoting Mr P. Manoharan, Director, Tourism Malaysia, India said, "Tourism plays a significant role in the economies of all commonwealth countries, as it generates foreign exchange and employment. India will play a significant role in spurring the expansion of tourism within Commonwealth countries."
