NDDB to spend Rs 200 cr to increase productivity

Our Bureau

Bangalore , March 18

THE National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) has earmarked Rs 200 crore for various productivity enhancement programmes over the next six years. More than 50 per cent of the amount (Rs 105 crore) will be invested on animal breeding, which will help the country sustain its position as the largest liquid milk producer.

Animal health care management with Rs 50 crore will get the next highest allocation during the period.

The NDDB proposes to spend Rs 30 crore on animal nutrition and feed technology while Rs 15 crore will be earmarked for animal management extension and training.

Under its animal health care management programme, the NDDB would be jointly implementing a project with the Kerala Government to control foot and mouth diseases (FMD) in the bovine animals in that State. It will contribute Rs 25 crore, a major share of the Rs. 34.18-crore project.

The NDDB's contribution would be in the form of technical and financial support to the project over a period of five years and aims at controlling the disease by reducing the incidence of FMD.

The project is expected to minimise economic losses due to FMD and benefit dairy farmers.

As part of its fertility management programme, so far the NDDB has trained 222 veterinarians from 26 milk unions across the country. The programme will help curtail losses to farmers due to reduced fertility in dairy animals by enhancing the skills of management to improve the productivity of dairy animals in the long run.

In an effort to develop some of the economically important local breeds of cattle and buffaloes in their native tracts, the NDDB has undertaken a programme for the development of indigenous breeds of cattle and buffaloes.

The NDDB through its various productivity enhancement programmes provides assistance to dairy cooperatives in making available required breeding, nutrition and health-care services to farmers, enabling them to increase the productivity of their animals and thereby, their income.
