Tatas to use Qualcomm tool for push-to-talk

Mumbai , March 18

QUALCOMM Inc and Tata Teleservices have signed a memorandum of understanding for use of Qualcomm's BREWchat solution to offer push-to-talk (PTT) services, among the latest applications available on wireless networks.

PTT services allow the mobile phone to connect to a network of cell-phones by just pushing a button and allow the wireless service to function like a walkie-talkie service.

Tata Teleservices plans to launch this service in mid-2004, said a news release from the company.

A non-binding MoU has been signed for use of Qualcomm's BREWchat solution and a binding agreement signed for wireless applications and services based on Qualcomm's BREW solution.

The MoU provides a framework for Tata Teleservices to roll out BREWChat-based services for up to seven million users. The BREWChat service is initially planned to be introduced across Tata Teleservices' existing eight circles of operations and to be extended across 20 circles after the company rolls out its service nationally.

"We envisage that push-to-talk, which is a huge success in the US, will receive an overwhelming response here in India, given the profile of our subscribers," said Mr Amit Bose, President, Telecom, Tata Teleservices.
