Atlas on Madurai water bodies

Our Correspondent

MADURAI: The Madurai District Administration is compiling a detailed atlas on water bodies in the district.

Addressing a seminar here, the Collector, Dr B. Chandra Mohan, said that the district is endowed with around 3,800 water harvesting structures, such as, ponds, tanks and ooranis.

The first volume on Thirumangalam block has been brought out already and the rest would be finished very soon. Details such as the dimensions of tanks, number of sluices, details of supply channels, current status, the source of pollution, tasks for intervention and details of renovation would be carried out. Sustainable development aimed at utilisation of natural sources by the present generation should not affect the needs of the future generation, he emphasised.
