TRAI against blocking of caller ID

Our Bureau

New Delhi , March 18

THE Telecom Regulatory Authority of India is not in favour of cellular service providers blocking caller line identification (CLI), the TRAI Chairman, Mr Pradip Baijal, said today.

"Even if the display of the calling party is blocked for some reason, the cellular operator concerned should know such numbers," Mr Baijal told newspersons on the sidelines of the ongoing Convergence India 2004 conference.

The comments of the telecom sector regulator come in the wake of cellular subscribers getting unidentifiable calls, ostensibly from political parties, seeking support in the Lok Sabha polls.

Certain operators have already stopped entertaining requests for blocking CLI to ensure security and privacy of their subscribers.
