Green-category status for plastics on the cards

Our Correspondent

Madurai , March 19

HOPES for the revival of the plastic industry in the State have blossomed with the Government planning to accord it a green-category status.

For long the industry has suffered with the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) banning the use of plastics and refusing to accord it a green-category status, resulting in several units migrating to other States.

According to Mr C.K. Sekar, President, Tamil Nadu Plastic Manufacturers Association, the elaborate meetings the association had with the chairperson of TNPCB, Ms Grija Vaidhyanathan, has brought about the change with the Government willing to lay down new guidelines on par with those in others States.

The industry had an investment of Rs 1,200 crore with a workforce of around seven lakh spread across 7,000 units all over the State.

There was good demand for plastics in the automobile sector, ancillary units and building and construction industry, he said.

It is proposed to hold an international exhibition at Chennai next year to make up the loss suffered in the previous years, he added.
