Scarless heart surgery

Our Bureau

BANGALORE: Scarless heart surgery is here: Mysore-based Vikram Hospital & Heart Centre says it is the first hospital in Karnataka to acquire the `Harmonic Scalpel' that enables scarless and nearly painless surgery.

With this method, patients who have had a bypass surgery can be saved the stress caused by the scars from where the blood vessels are removed for the bypass, according to Dr Nagendra Prakash, Chief Cardio-thoracic Surgeon of the hospital. The scalpel, costing Rs 30 lakh, uses ultrasonic energy that allows cutting and clotting and leaves a barely visible scar on the skin, a release said. The surgeries using it would cost an additional Rs 2,500 - Rs 15,000 depending on the procedure. Patients who underwent the Harmonic Scalpel-based surgery have shown faster recovery, less infection and complications, require no frequent dressing and need shorter hospital stay, the release said.
