Science & Technology NGRI gets gas hydrates project Our Bureau
Hyderabad , March 19 The National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI), is undertaking a Department of Ocean Development-sponsored project costing Rs 26.55 crore to to develop methods of better understanding formation of gas hydrates and future exploitation. Gas hydrates with enormous potential of holding methane gas is one of the alternative sources of energy being pursued worldwide. In tropical countries like India, deepwater sediments are considered favourable locales for gas hydrate reserves. Using latest facilities, the NGRI will carry out detailed investigations for identifying the quantum of gas hydrates in the country's continental margins. For the Ocean Development Department, exploitation of gas hydrates is a major thrust programme. The NGRI in collaboration with the GAIL (India) has successfully completed several projects for processing and interpreting seismic and other geophysical data that would be helpful in the search for gas hydrates, according to an NGRI release here. The preliminary scientific work carried out by the NGRI and GAIL has led to the launch of major experiments to locate gas hydrate resources on the continental margins of the country. The present initiative is a step towards strengthening this pursuit and establishing feasibility.
