Mangalore , March 19

MR N. Venkataramani, Vice-President (Operations), Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL), has said that MRPL is processing 10 million tonnes of crude within a year of ONGC taking over it.

Inaugurating the national conference on `Development and challenges in manufacturing engineering' organised by the Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT) at Manipal on Thursday, he said that the quality of products manufactured at MRPL plant are far better than others.

MRPL wants ancillary industries to come around its vicinity. At present, it is buying ancillary products from industries based in Mumbai and Chennai, he added.

Mr Bharadwaj, General Manager (R&D), BEML, Kolar, who delivered the keynote address, said that manufacturing firms should replace obsolete methods, processes, and systems with a structure based on the latest technology and best human resource utilisation. Quality products and customer satisfaction figure most in the competitive world.

He said that those who have introduced computer-based technology into manufacturing operations have increased their productivity and market share. Referring to the infrastructure available in coastal Karnataka, he said that there is scope for industrial development in the region. The presence of more than 1,500 families of goldsmiths in Karwar of Uttara Kannada district could help establish jewellery-manufacturing units there.
