Outlook Bajaj Auto plans four more 2-wheeler models next fiscal Our Bureau
Mr Sanjiv Bajaj, Vice-President, Finance
Bangalore , March 19 BAJAJ Auto plans to set up assembly plants in Indonesia and Brazil soon and launch four two-wheelers before July this year. "We expect to export around half a million vehicles in five years," the Bajaj Auto Vice-President for Finance, Mr Sanjiv Bajaj, told newspersons. Mr Bajaj said the assembly plant in Indonesia is expected to be set up within the next 12 months because of the popularity of Bajaj Pulsar bikes in that country. He said already 1,000 Pulsars have been sold in Indonesia and added the company could rope in a local partner for setting up its assembly plant. He said Indonesia will be used as a hub for exporting to all other South-East Asian countries. Brazil too will act as a hub for the South American market. However, no timeframe has been fixed for setting up the plant there. Bajaj exported nearly one lakh vehicles including three-wheelers during the last fiscal and this fiscal (2003-04), it is expected to close the year with 1.5 lakh vehicles. In another five years, Bajaj expects to sell half a million vehicles abroad. Mr Bajaj said the company plans to launch four more two-wheelers during the first half of the next fiscal (2004-05). The first of these, code-named, Super 100, a remodelled Kawasaki model, will be launched during April. Another bike, code-named, K-60, will be launched in June. A remodelled Chetak will be launched in July and an ungeared scooter called Wave will be launched around the same time. He said the DTSi (digital twin spark ignition) engine, which is not fitted into Pulsar, will also be fitted into other vehicles as well. The DTSi engine gives more mileage, meets 2005 emission norms, and delivers 80 per cent more power than other engines. Mr Bajaj said the company expects to sell 1.5 million vehicles by the end of the current fiscal and expects to post a turnover of around Rs 6,000 crore. Of that, Rs 500 crore would be from exports. Bajaj Auto has plants in Pune, which manufactures scooters, Aurangabad, which manufactures motorcycles and three-wheelers, and Chakan, which manufactures Pulsar bikes.
