River in distress

K.K. Mustafah

The Periyar, the largest river in Kerala, is highly polluted by effluents from about 250 industries in Udyogamandal Industrial Estate in Eloor-Edayar region on the banks of the river.

The industries take large amounts of fresh water from the Periyar and in turn discharge concentrated toxic effluents after little treatment. Toxic pollution of the river has almost wiped out the traditional occupations of fishing and farming.

Change of colour due to pollution can be spotted in many parts of the river. The area has been identified as one of the toxic hotspots in the world by Greenpeace, an international environmental organisation.
