Anti-rabies vaccine lab inaugurated in AP

Hyderabad , March 22

WITH a view to making the State free of rabies in five years, the Andhra Pradesh Government has opened a laboratory here to develop cell culture vaccine for animals, especially dogs. The first of batch of vaccine doses is expected to be out by next year-end.

Inaugurated by Dr M.V. Rao, Chairman of AP-Netherlands Biotechnology Programme Committee, the laboratory will produce two lakh doses in the next three years. Subsequently, it could produce 20 lakh of doses.

The production cost for each dose of one ml is put at Rs 5. "Some private companies are selling the same at Rs 45 to Rs 65," Mr Dr M. Ramakrishna Rao, Joint Director (Disease Control), said.

Addressing presspersons after the inaugural, he said the first phase of the project would see rabies off from the twin cities and other urban areas.

In the next phase, villages adjacent to forests would be covered. The project sought to create an immune zone in the border areas of the State.

"The cell culture vaccine is superior to the nervous tissue (sheep brain). The advantage is that growth of virus is uniform. It is more cost effective, too," he said.

Mr Lateef Khan, in-charge of the lab, said it would take one year for development of the vaccine and one more year for field trials, before distributing it through hospitals.

He said the lab's capacity would take care of the 15-17 lakh dog population in the State. In the twin cities there were 1.5-2 lakh dogs.
