New Delhi , March 23

THE Government will soon start preparing detailed project reports for different links under the Rs 5,50,000-crore national river inter-linking scheme. The pre-feasibility studies for all the 31 proposed links have been completed and the reports are currently being prepared.

"Now the time has come for taking the next logical step - to prepare the detailed project reports for links whose feasibility has already been established. Two links, namely Ken-Betwa and Parbati-Kalisindh-Chambal, had been identified by the Government. Efforts are on to bring about a consensus among the States concerned and start work on preparation of DPRs for these two projects," the Union Water Resources Minister, Mr Arjun Charan Sethi, said on Tuesday.

Speaking at the annual general meeting of the National Water Development Agency, Mr Sethi said that the feasibility reports have been prepared for seven peninsular links and one Himalayan river. Reports of three more links are expected to come in by the end of this month.

Meanwhile the Task Force on Interlinking of Rivers chaired by the former Power Minister, Mr Suresh Prabhu, is likely to submit its final Action Plan by next month, Mr Sethi said.

On funding, the Minister said that the Government was aiming at a combination of private and public money for the scheme as recommended by the Task Force. "The exact nature of funding can only be determined after the costs and implantation plans are finalised," he said.
