Letters Sugar saga
This is with reference to the editorial "Bitter-sweet sugar saga" (Business Line, March 24). The editorial rightly stated that the structural issued in the sugar sector need to be addressed. It is unfortunate that all the policy initiatives and decision taken by the Government have been only knee-jerk reactions to the day-to-day problems rather than a holistic one. Pricing of sugarcane has been considered as a political and sensitive issue rather than an economical and rational issue. This is demonstrated by the fact that the Government, on the one hand, decontrols the sugar prices and on the other controls the sugarcane prices. Both these efforts are self-contradictory and are irrational. The price of the sugarcane and that of sugar are interdependent and, perhaps, proportional. It is imperative that the pricing of sugarcane is depoliticised and is invested in an independent body. C. Ramesh Keeramangalam (TN)
