Tea Board raises 2003 export figures

THE Tea Board has revised the total figures for tea exports from India during 2003 at 173 million kg (mkg) from 164.9 mkg, according to a statement issued by the Indian Tea Association. In 2002, Indian tea exports was 201 mkg. During 2003, it dropped by 27.90 mkg. In terms of value it dropped by Rs 202.47 crore to Rs 1,550.92 crore.

Exports to all the significant markets have dropped, except Pakistan and Afghanistan. The worst hit market was Iraq where exports dropped from 44.17 mkg in 2002 to 12.69 mkg in 2003.

In Pakistan, tea exporters increased their share to 6.40 mkg against 3.70 mkg in the previous year. The tea industry continued to suffer in the traditional strong markets such as the CIS countries and the UK. Exports to Russia dropped to 42.76 mkg from 48.30 mkg. Total exports to the CIS countries dropped by 4.40 mkg to 58.31 mkg.
