THE other day, Manga, a 10-year-old girl from Malkipuram in East Godavari district, had a mouthful of curd rice and chewed it too. Wondering what's so great about it?
It was the first time that Manga could take any solid food as she was suffering from a rare deformity that kept her jaw out of action all these years. "She was not in a position to move her jaw more than one millimetre," Dr Y. Venkata Rao, consultant plastic and cosmetic surgeon at Care Hospital, said.
Dr Rao performed a four-hour-long surgery to correct the deformity that brought back action to Manga's jaws. "Manga's deformity was due to an injury on the chin in her childhood," Dr Rao told newsmen.
He said bony deposits at the jaw joint after such minor accidents prevented free movement of the mouth. "Left untreated, the problem worsens as in the case of Manga," he said.
In medical parlance, the condition is called `bilateral tempero-mandibular joint ankylosis.' "While trauma is a major cause, infections in ears, too, might lead to this condition," he said.
Explaining the surgery procedure, he said bony blocks to an extent of one centimetre were removed from each side of the joint.
The operation, which usually costs Rs 40,000-Rs 50,000, was conducted free of cost.
"All through I was taking only liquid food. I'm very happy that I can eat solid food now," a beaming Manga said. "Now, I would like to taste Hyderabadi biryani."
