New Delhi , March 24 INDIA and Europe could co-operate in exchange of communication technologies including applications for 3G (third generation) mobiles and digital television, according to the European Commission Information Society Deputy Director General, Mr Peter Zangl. Content, services and applications were decisive for the development of 3G mobiles, Mr Zangl said at the Euro-India 2004, jointly organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry and the European Commission. Mr Zangl said the average customer was more concerned about products and services which are "available, affordable and which entertain them, simplify and improve their lives than technologies." "Independently of any technological choice, it is of vital importance to ensure inter-operability of systems as users want to be able to use their mobile phones irrespective of their location. If technology does not do that, it has no appeal and its usage could be limited," he said. Referring to opportunities offered by digital television, he said it would extend Internet penetration beyond those who own computers. "The future looks promising for Internet on television. Broadcasters will increasingly be using Internet protocol in their transmissions over the next few years in Europe and in India as well," Mr Zangl said, adding that interactive television and 3G mobile terminals fitted the lifestyle of many people who had no access to personal computers and would enable them to use online public services and interactive content.
