Water Corporate - Society & Development TVS Motor's initiative ensures clean drinking water for Hosur Our Bureau
Bangalore , March 25 HOSUR, a sprawling industrial township near Bangalore, which has been deprived of clean drinking water supply despite a dam built for the purpose, will no more face the problem thanks to an initiative taken by TVS Motor Company. For six years the population of 95,000 had been facing the problem due to contamination of water in the Kelavarappally Dam due to industrial effluence. Realising the need to extend a helping hand, the two-wheeler company sought Tamil Nadu Government's help and undertook a water treatment project that will ensure safe drinking water to the people. "This proactive initiative will help the large shortfall of water faced by the people of Hosur, otherwise dependent on ground water or external water supply," said a company official. The company appointed a consultant to study the quality of water in Kelavarapally Dam, which was built with the objective of ensuring clean water supply to both industrial and domestic users in Hosur. However, due to strong ammonia content it had become unfit for consumption for domestic users. Despite the dam being equipped with a water treatment plant, it was found inadequate to ensure clean water for domestic use. On realising the need for clean potable water, Mr Venu Srinivasan, Chairman and Managing Director of TVS Motor Company, took up the issue with the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Ms J. Jayalalithaa, for undertaking the task. The company is reported to have shared equally the estimated cost of Rs 50 lakh with the District authorities and implemented the project within a month after assuming the responsibility. It first concentrated on upgrading the existing water treatment plant in the dam with the help of water management consultants. The technology utilised lime to raise the quality of water by rendering it free from pathogenic organisms and colour and odour. The water treatment process used in Kelavarapally Dam has been used only in a few cities like in very few places like Occoquan in Virginia State, Passaic basin in New Jersey, the city of Windhoek in Namibia and Orange County in the US.
