TN: Limestone-based units' plea

Our Correspondent

MADURAI: The Perambalur district administration has forwarded a proposal to the State Government for the inclusion of limestone-based units in the New Anna Marumalarchi Thittam (NAMT).

According to Mr S. Asokan, General Manager, District Industries Centre, only agro-based units are being permitted under NAMT, with locally available agricultural produce as raw materials.

However, in the blocks of Ariyalur, Sendurai and Tirumanur in the district, 120 million tonnes of limestone are available but only a part is being used by the cement industries. A few varieties of limestone are being used for making slacked lime, as a popular rural industry. While seeking the limestone-based units being included under NAMT, thrust would be given to the manufacture of valued-added products. Efforts would also be made to train the entrepreneurs in making value-added products using limestone, he said.
