Software EU ready to defend ruling on Microsoft Our Bureau
New Delhi , March 25 AFTER slapping a fine of Euro 497 million ($611 million) fine on Microsoft Corporation, a top official of the European Commission said on Thursday that if required, it will defend its decision in court. "We are convinced that we have a case. We hope Microsoft will take the right steps (and stop crushing rivals)... However, if the company challenges our decision in the court, we will defend our stand," the European Commission Member, Mr Erkki Liikanen, told reporters here. The European Commission had announced on Wednesday that it had slapped a fine of Euro 497 million on Microsoft for violating competition laws and indulging in illegal behaviour by leveraging its near monopoly in the markets for operating systems. Microsoft had said that it would challenge the decision in the European Union courts at Luxembourg. In response to questions on outsourcing to India, Mr Liikanen said the European Commission was in favour of an open trading system.
