Water conservation drive in Kerala

Our Bureau

KOCHI: The State Government has chalked out a massive water conservation programme involving local bodies and the Kerala Institute of Local Administration. A State-wide campaign will soon be launched to spread the message that `water conservation is to save the people.'

The Local Administration Minister, Mr Cherkalam Abdulla, said a joint effort was necessary to conserve groundwater. As part of the programme, 20 million pits will be dug across the State to harvest rainwater on June 5, the World Environment Day.

The Minister has called upon the people to cooperate with the project by digging pits of two feet depth, length and width to maintain the level of groundwater by conserving rainwater during the monsoon. He said an average of 1,600 pits should be dug in every ward. Awareness classes are being planned in all wards in the State ahead of digging pits in June.
