Health Key-hole shoulder surgery performed at Manipal Hospital Our Bureau
Bangalore , March 26 THE Shoulder and Sports Medicine section at the Manipal Hospital recently performed "Arthroscopic Stabilisation Procedure", a key-hole surgery to stabilise the shoulder joint, on a 24-year-old youth who had recurrent shoulder dislocations. Conducted for the first time in Karnataka, the operation has brought hope to all those who suffer from dislocated shoulders, especially sportspersons and children. Every time the shoulder dislocates, it rubs off a part of the articular cartilage leading to early arthritis. In an Arthroscopic Procedure, a key-hole is made at the back of the shoulder. The surgeon can then see the anatomy of the shoulder on a television screen through the arthroscope, repair the soft tissues and reattach them to their original position using bio-absorbable anchors that disappear in due course of time. Dr Mahesh Reddy, Consultant in Orthopedics with special training in Shoulder and Sports Medicine in U.K., performed the procedure on Mr Thyagaraj from Mangalore. The patient had dislocated his shoulder many times while playing games and had been suffering for the last few years. The advantages of key-hole surgery are that the actual pathology in the shoulder is visualised and tackled better. There is a very minimal pain, and the rehabilitation and recovery of the patient is faster. The person can return to work or sports early. According to Dr Reddy, Manipal Hospital is among the few centres in the world to have the expertise and relevant equipment to offer this service.
