Health Variety - Alternative Medicines `Ayurveda, yoga have good commercial value' Our Bureau
Mangalore , March 26 COMMERCIAL exploitation of traditional Indian knowledge and its marketing were topics of interest at a session at the national seminar on "Intellectual Property Rights" organised by Sri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara College of Business Management in Mangalore on Friday. Dr B.R. Ananthan, Dean of the Department of MBA at University of Mysore, who was the resource person for the session on "Commercial exploitation of intellectual property", said that in this era of globalisation the traditional knowledge domains such as Ayurveda and Yoga have good commercial value. The concept of herbal medicine is also gaining momentum around the world. Art and culture of the country should be considered as intellectual properties as some people in the West are using Indian classical music for music therapy. Though here the number of people learning Indian classical music is decreasing, people abroad are showing interest in it, he said. Commercial exploitation of intellectual property through patents will give marketing advantage for the patent-holder, he said, adding that the rate of return is highest in a successful product. Stating that physical property is being replaced by intellectual property in the world, he said that knowledge is the prime capital for all economic activities. Mr Srinivas Kudva, Chairman of Canara Workshop Pvt Ltd, Mangalore, said that industrialists should recognise intellectual properties of their employees and take steps to nurture them. Stating that it is essential for a company to market intellectual property of its staff, he said there should be a marketing department to handle it.
