New Delhi , March 28

SURYA Vinayak Industries Ltd (SVIL), the country's largest manufacturer of sandalwood oil and one of the leading manufacturers of perfumery compounds and essences, is poised to leverage its expertise in the field of sandal wood.

The North India-based Rs 300-crore company is developing its own exclusive brand using sandalwood as the primary ingredient and will launch a high-premium product in the cosmetics range early next month. It is also mulling the possibility of listing on the bourses in the coming fiscal year.

With a major presence in the business-to-business (B2B) market, three manufacturing facilities in North and East India and a licence to export sandalwood oil (a regulated commodity), SVIL has been involved in research and development (R&D) in sandalwood since the early 90s. It is now ready with its first products that are in the cosmetics sector.

`Lambency', meaning glow in French, is the corporate house's first brand that offers three products next month and another two by June this year. "Come April, we will soft-launch Lambency Sandalwood Face Pack, the Lambency Sandalwood Oil and Lambency Rose Water, with a guarantee of purity that has not been given before, as ours will all be certified products," says Brand Manager Mr Mohan S. Khathayat, who is the brain behind the brand.

He also reveals that the products to be launched later in June are a sandalwood skin scrub and an all-purpose sandalwood skin crème. SVIL group has already tied up with heritage hotels and high-class beauty parlours across North India for the use of its beauty products. "We are in the process of applying for the American FDA and European ECE certification to import our cosmetics range," says Mr Sudhir Sharma, General Managerm (Sales and Marketing), who pegs the projections for the brand's turnover in the first year at Rs 12-18 crore. He feels that this is likely to double within the next three years.

Apart from cosmetics, the company is also in the process of creating new markets for sandalwood. The company hopes to make a major breakthrough in the healthcare segment in the next few years. As of now, cosmetics is going to be the company's brand focus.
