Drought conditions hit betel vines in Tiruchi

Our Correspondent

Madurai , March 29

THE betel vine farming in the Thottiam and Balasamudram belt in the Tiruchi district has been severely affected due to the prevailing drought conditions for the last two years.

According to Mr V. Kadiresan Pillai, a betel leaf grower in Thottiam, while the area under the plantation has fallen significantly, the betel level prices in the retail market are ruling high at Rs 3,500-4,000 for 200 `kowlis' (of 100 betel leaves each).

As the area has been nearer to the Cauvery and with soil quality suitable for the crop, the region became notable for betel vine farming.

In the best of times, a minimum of 3,000 baskets of betel leaves used to be packet off to adjacent areas such as Tiruchi, Mayiladuthurai, Karur, Coimbatore etc. However, these days, hardly 400 baskets are being sent. With the Cauvery drying up, the water level has gone down and one has to dig deep pits to lift water for the fields, at a considerable cost, he said.

The Government should come to the rescue of betel leaf growers, he pleaded.
