Open skies

This refers to "Skies open up over the sub-continent" (Business Line, March 29). Reports state that 262 international frequencies remain unutilised by India.

This is mainly because Indian Airlines does not have enough aircraft to utilise all the available routes.

On the other hand, admission of foreign airlines will be detrimental to the domestic airlines as the latter are not yet strong enough to match the competition.

Considering these facts, the Naresh Chandra Committee has recommended that private domestic carriers such as Jet Airways and Air Sahara operate on all existing unused international routes of Air-India and Indian Airlines.

It is time domestic airlines were allowed to operate even beyond the Indian sub-continent to garner additional revenue, mainly from the tourism industry.
