Workshop on CDM awareness

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , March 30

IDENTIFYING the need for improving awareness on CDM (clean development mechanism) among various stakeholders in the South Asian region, EPTRI (Environment Protection Training and Research Institute) has decided to organise a two-day workshop in July or August.

The workshop, which is likely to get funding from international agencies, would provide an opportunity for the stakeholders from all the South Asian countries to share their experiences.

The workshop is part of the two-year action plan prepared by the institute for promoting awareness on CDM.

Besides creating awareness, the action plan sought to identify pilot project areas for CDM projects.

In a presentation on `CDM catalysing sustainable development in Andhra Pradesh,' Mr P. Prasada Rao, Programme Officer of EPTRI, said the action plan lined up workshops in all the districts.

(The Andhra Pradesh Government appointed EPTRI as the nodal agency for CDM, keeping in view the global and national efforts to take up CDM projects in order to comply with the Kyoto Protocol.)

The institute also wanted to conduct State-level workshops in Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka.

"The institute would explore possibilities to assist various State Governments in identification and preparation of CDM projects," Mr Prasada Rao said.

The presentation was part of the day-long seminar on `CDM opportunities in energy efficiency projects' organised by APITCO and Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency Limited here on Monday.

"We have identified training needs with regard to capacity building for policy makers and orientation programmes for officials and financial institutions," he said.

Showcasing some CDM projects like `non-edible oil as bio-fuel' and `energy from waste' that are being implemented in the State, Mr Prasada Rao said these could be replicated elsewhere in the country.
