Kolkata , March 31

THE Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT-KGP) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the University of Waterloo, Canada, with a view to exploring possibilities for co-operation in research, scholarship and exchange programmes.

The MoU was signed at the end of the visit of a high-level Canadian academic delegation comprising representatives from 13 Canadian universities and institutes.

Addressing a news conference on the occasion here, Prof S.K. Dube, Director of IIT-KGP, said that both the institutes would leverage on each other's strengths for "mutually-enriching" collaborations and exchange programmes.

Besides undertaking research programmes jointly, there would be opportunities for exchange of students and faculty both for study and research.

Prof A. Chakma, Vice-President, Academic and Provost, University of Waterloo, said the MoU would enable both the institutes to jointly take up research in "frontier areas" such as information, communications and technology.

He said the University of Waterloo would sign a MoU with the Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai (IIT-Chennai) with the same objective.

Six years ago, it had signed its first MoU with IIT-Chennai.According to Mr Ravi Seethapathy, leader of the Canadian delegation and an alumnus of IIT-KGP, the long-term objective is to establish a "solid science & technology exchange pipeline between India and Canada through innovative research."
