Bangalore , March 31

BHEL's Electronics Division in Bangalore has bagged a Rs 19-crore contract for the supply of solar-powered water pumping systems to Punjab.

The contract is for supply, installation, commissioning and post-sales service of 700 sets of solar photovoltaic water pumping systems for the Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA). This is the single largest SPV bid, totalling 1.6 MW, won by BHEL and will be installed over the next few months, the public sector heavy electricals major has said. The PV (photovoltaic) modules will be manufactured at the Bangalore facility.

The system consists of a 1,800-W solar photovoltaic array, which is directly connected to a 2-HP DC surface pump.

The pump will provide uninterrupted water for drinking and irrigation purposes to farmers. On a typical sunny day, the system can pump nearly 1.4 lakh litres of water for a total dynamic head of 10 metres. PEDA, the nodal State agency for implementing renewable energy technologies, is jointly implementing the programme with the Ministry of Non-conventional Energy Sources.

The Electronics Division's SPV business, which is nearly 20 years old, has developed and delivered systems for use in rural electrification, water pumping, telecom and railway signalling. It has now diversified into large systems that are both stand-alone and grid interactive. The unit has so far contributed over 12 MW of solar power to the country's power generating capacity. It also exports to markets in Germany, Italy, Australia and Thailand, the release said.
