Chennai , Apri 1 ALCATEL, a global major in communication networking, has invested $2 million (about Rs 9 crore) to set up a simulation and testing lab at SlashSupport facility in Chennai. The lab will simulate an array of possible problem scenarios at Alcatel's customer locations, and enable effective technology support solutions. This is the Alcatel's first investment in a technology support in India, said a senior company official. In the expanded relationship, SlashSupport's engineers will provide technology support for Alcatel's large networking products for their customers across 80 countries in Asia-Pacific, Latin America and the US, Mr Shiva Ramani, Chief Executive Officer, SlashSupport, told newspersons here on Thursday. For instance, when a corporate customer in the US, with a network problem, calls Alcatel for a solution, the call is automatically diverted to SlashSupport lab in Chennai for support. The problem will be simulated in the lab and engineers will find a solution for it, said a company official. The solution could be provided in a few minutes or could take a few days, he said. Mr Ramani neither revealed the number of people working for Alcatel nor the revenue generation for SlashSupport from Alcatel. Mr Steve Tufts, Vice-President, Alcatel, said the lab would enable testing and troubleshooting and simulate advanced networking technologies and software applications. Alcatel, with sales of £12.5 billion in 2003 and operating in over 130 countries, supplied the lab equipment while SlashSupport provided the space and manpower, he said. SlashSupport, a Cybernet Software Systems Group and provider of technology support, will support over 1,000 installations of Alcatel worldwide. The cost reduction to Alcatel through outsourcing technology support could be about 30 per cent. SlashSupport plans to hire over 1,200 employees in 2004 for its technology support facility in Chennai.
