Mangalore , April 2 THE Chairman-in-charge of New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT), Mr G.J. Rao, has said that the Union Ministry of Commerce has provided financial assistance to the port under the "Assistance to State for Infrastructure Development for Exports" (ASIDE) to develop certain export promotion activities in the region. The New Mangalore Port is the first port to get this assistance from the Centre, he said. Addressing presspersons here on Friday, Mr Rao said that the assistance is to the tune of Rs 4.17 crore under the Central-sponsored scheme and Rs 0.7 crore under the State-sponsored scheme. Stating that NMPT is ready to provide Rs 10 crore for broad-gauge conversion between Mangalore and Bangalore, he said that the early completion of the work on the railway line could help increase its cargo handling by at least five million tonnes. NMPT is also investing Rs 20 crore for the conversion of the road between Pumpwell Circle in Mangalore and Suratkal to a four-lane one. Considering the demands of agro product exporters and importers, the Ministry of Agriculture has confirmed the opening of a Plant Quarantine Office in Mangalore, he said.
