`New tech in leather tanning must be cost effective'

Our Bureau

Chennai , April 2

NEW technologies in leather tanning that help reduce pollution should also be cost effective, said Mr M.M. Hashim, Chairman, MAKH & Sons.

Addressing the formal launch of Ezyme A, an enzyme substitute that does away with lime and sodium sulphide in leather tanning, Mr Hashim said that tanners in Tamil Nadu stringently followed pollution control norms.

But at a price - tanning cost was 7 per cent higher when compared to other major tanning centres. So cost management is a key factor while introducing new technologies, he said.

Dr T. Ramasami, Director, Central Leather Research Institute, said that the enzyme is a product that even developed countries are yet to produce. The enzyme is used to remove hair from hides and skins, and can be used in the conventional tanning process. The use of lime and sodium sulphide, which pose an occupational hazard and pollute the environment, can be avoided.

Mr R.P. Krishnammachari, Managing Director, Textan Chemicals (P) Ltd, which has developed Ezyme A, said that the enzyme saves on 60 per cent of the water used, significantly brings down pollution at the de-hairing stage, and helps improve quality of leather.

The quality of by-products such as hair and flesh was also better. The CLRI was also in the process of evaluating and certifying the product, which will add to its brand value, he said.
