People Former UB head to advise Jumbo Group on spirits biz Boby Kurian
Bangalore , April 2 THE Jumbo Group Chairperson, Ms Vidya Manohar Chhabria, has roped in the service of a former president of United Breweries (UB) group, Mr J.S. Damija, as an advisor for the spirits business. The $2-billion Dubai-based Jumbo Group controls Shaw Wallace & Co Ltd (SWC), the second largest spirits company in the country after UB. When contacted, Mr Damija confirmed his advisory role to Ms Chhabria and Shaw Wallace. It is learnt that he would offer expertise on the operations side of the distilleries. Mr Damija headed UB's beer business from 1989 to 1996, and then played a role in establishing the domestic operations of the world's second largest brewer, SABMiller. He was vice-chairman on the board of SABMiller India Ltd, and interestingly, exited at a time when Shaw Wallace divested 50 per cent stake and management control in its beer business to SABMIller in May 2003. Ms Chhabria took over as the Chairperson of Jumbo Group following the death of its founder Chairman and her husband, Manu Chhabria. Shaw Wallace's spirits interests are spread between Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) and country liquor. While Mr A.K.M.A. Shamsuddin heads the IMFL business, Mr Deepak Chaudhuri, who also handles the company's traditional businesses, drives the country liquor.
