US Senators

This is with reference to the article "Friends of India" (Business Line, April 2). It is heartening to read that 20 US Senators from both the Republican and the Democratic Parties have joined hands to form "Friends of India".

Kudos to the Indian Ambassador in the US, Mr Lalit Mansingh, who worked tirelessly to form such an umbrella of friendly Senators. Senators in the US wield a lot of power, and the formation of such a group is good news for India.

Whether one likes it or not, the truth is that the US is world's only superpower, and it wields considerable power at world forums. To have friends in the US Senate will do no harm for a developing country such as India.

The interesting point here is that the "Friends of India" has representatives from both the Republican and Democratic Parties. This will ensure that whichever party comes to power in the US, India's cause will be furthered.

As pointed out in the article: "There can be no doubt that the caucus will make a great impact as an influential platform for projecting India's stand on various issues."

The Indian economy is shining now, and forums such as "Friends of India" will only help it grow faster.
