International calls

This is with reference to the editorial "Calls go cheap" (Business Line, April 5). The article has rightly pointed out that competition in the telecom sector has given the consumers immense benefits. However, BSNL could have cut its tariff more.

As pointed out by the editorial: "The full impact will be visible only when the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India decides to review its fixed levy of `access deficit charge' payable by all ILD operators, mainly to the public sector operators, BSNL and MTNL."

The access deficit charge, which has been fixed arbitrarily now, should be reduced from the current Rs 4.25 per minute. If this is done, then international calls will become even cheaper.
