Tuticorin port handles record cargo

THE Tuticorin port handled a record cargo throughput of 13.67 million tonnes during financial year 2003-04. This is an increase of 2.89 per cent over previous year's figure of 13.29 million tonnes.

Imports were 10.18 million tonnes, and exports accounted for 34.94 lakh tonnes. During 2003-04, the port trust completed hard rock dredging at berth number eight at a cost of Rs 43 crore. This enables the port to handle deep draught vessels up to 10.7 metre.

The port trust is likely to report a net surplus of Rs 45.36 crore (revised estimates), as against budget estimates of Rs 54.69 crore, says the release.
