`Sobar' variant on prowl

Vinson Kurian

Thiruvananthapuram , April 5

A NEW variant of the `Sobar' virus, W32.Sober.F@mm, with medium risk, has been detected, according to an advisory from IT Secure, a specialist security solutions firm.

The virus is a mass mailing worm that arrives through e-mail. The subject line of the mail could read as any of the following - `Mail delivery failure', `Message error', `Mail delivery status' and `Confirmation required'.

Some of the sub lines might indicate that some mails sent by the user in the past may not have been delivered. The user is most likely to open the mail to find out which of his emails has not been delivered. If the user opens the mail and proceeds to click on the attachment, the system gets infected. Thereafter, the virus will transmit itself through its SMTP engine to whichever e-mail ID it manages to find.

Further, in case if the user is not connected to Internet, it will open up dial-up connection to find the same. The `Error!' pop-up message will be continuously flashed to the user.

All anti-virus vendors have released updated virus definition to detect virus as also the removal tool to clean up the system.
