Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Institution of Engineers (India), Kerala State Centre, is hosting a talk on `Vaimanika Sastram' at the Institution Hall here on Wednesday.

The talk, being delivered by Mr D.K. Hari, a Chennai-based management consultant, is being jointly organised by the Institute of Electronic and Electrical Engineers (IEEE) - Kerala section, the Thiruvananthapuram chapter of the Computer Society of India (CSI) and the Thiruvananthapuram branch of the Aeronautical Society of India.

An Institution spokesman said here that Mr Hari had launched an initiative called "Bharath Gyan" to collect information on the indigenous knowledge that had been evolved in India through ages. "Vaimanika Sastram" was one of such programmes. Mr Hari has travelled to over 30 countries and has visited over 200 museums, theme parks and libraries.

Vimana finds a mention in epics such as Ramayana and Mahabharata. It has been discussed in great technical detail in our ancient texts and some of these have also been translated into English. The talk will cover spacecraft technology that evolved in India from ancient times to modern times with reference to various aspects like the technical sketch of the ancient Vimana, its mechanisms, fuels and motors used, metals and their alloys.
