Education UGC-Infonet facility in Mangalore University Our Bureau
Mangalore , April 7 MANGALORE University has launched the UGC-Infonet services for its faculty and students here. UGC-Infonet is a consortium of universities for electronic access to scholarly literature in all areas of learning. Mangalore University is one among the 50 universities selected by the University Grants Commission for the implementation of the services. Inaugurating the UGC-Infonet service, Dr H.S. Ballal, Vice-Chancellor of Manipal Academy of Higher Education, said that this would mitigate the shortage of periodicals and journals faced by university libraries for many years. The service will increase the resources available to the universities for teaching and learning. The university community would get the best current and archival periodical literature from all over the world, he said. Mr K. Prakash, Senior Technical Officer of Inflibnet, Ahmedabad, said that nearly 2,000 journals are available under UGC-Infonet service. Soon social science titles would also be made available under this. Prof B. Hanuamaiah, Vice-Chancellor of Mangalore University, who presided over the function, said that the facility would be extended to the affiliated colleges in a gradual manner. Mr M.K. Bhandi, University Librarian, said that information and communication technology would be used to transform learning environment from a mono-dimensional one to a multi-dimensional one under the programme.
