Oilseeds & Edible Oil SOPA team to visit Pak to boost meal trade Our Bureau
Chennai , April 7 A 10-member delegation of the Soyabean Processors Association of India (SOPA) will visit Pakistan to accelerate growth of soyameal trade between both the nations. The team, comprising representatives of major domestic soya processing and exporting units, will be led by Mr Davish Jain, former chairman of SOPA and Managing Director of Prestige Foods Ltd. The delegation will begin its 5-day visit from April 9. The visit, co-ordinated by the Pakistan Poultry Association, intends to boost soyameal exports with particular focus on poultry feed industry, said a press release from the association.Soyameal trade between India and Pakistan was in the excess of 1,65,000 tonnes in 1998-99. But owing to suspension of rail route between the two countries, the figure dipped to 9,000 tonnes in 2001-02. During the current season, however, exports are close to 50,000 tonnes. Following the easing of bilateral relations between the countries and revival of the passenger rail traffic, the SOPA delegation has mooted for a new "Samjhota Vyapar Express" to carry freight. According to Mr D.R. Kalra, Executive Director, SOPA, lower freight costs and ample availability of soyameal in the country was economically advantageous for both the countries.
