Our Bureau

Chennai , April 7

BHARAT Heavy Electricals Ltd expects contracts worth at least Rs 1,000 crore for construction of power projects in South India. The estimate is based on promising-looking negotiations. These include the 500 MW projects of Tuticorin, North Chennai and Bellary and the 250 MW Neyveli project.

This is on top of the Rs 907-crore that BHEL's `Power Projects Southern Region' unit received in 2003-04.

Judging by the power projects that are coming up in South India, BHEL-PSSR expects orders worth Rs 3,000 crore in the coming few years, BHEL's Executive Director, Mr N. Kamalanathan, who is in charge of the unit, said at a press conference here on Tuesday. In 2003-04, the unit achieved a turnover of Rs 221 crore, and a pre-tax profit of Rs 40 crore.

At present, there are projects totalling a capacity of 4,000 MW under construction by the PSSR unit.
