CHENNAI: There is an urgent need to safeguard large volume of data that is available with government on the Web from various threats, including a virus attack or hacking, said Mr Vivek Harinarain, Tamil Nadu Information Technology Secretary.

"We are safe because nobody attacked us," he said at a seminar organised by the Madras Chamber of Commerce and Industry on "Strategies for security enterprise information," here on Thursday.

"We are aware of the fact that in future more and more important government transactions will be done on the Net. We need to protect such data, and should have a secured network in place," he said.

With a secured payment gateway, which will enable citizens' pay their bills to the government on the Net, all business transactions in future with the State Government will be done through the Web, he said.
