Maruti launches Alto base variant

Our Bureau

New Delhi , April 8

IN a move to drive growth for the compact car Alto, Maruti Udyog Ltd today announced the launch of a new base variant of the Alto priced at Rs 2.3 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

The variant, which comes without an air-conditioner, is Rs 35,000 cheaper than the existing base model, the Alto LX.

Industry officials point out that the new variant brings the price points of the Alto closer to that of the Maruti 800, and may be a part of the company's strategy to eventually replace its bread-and-butter model with the Alto in the next 2-3 years. The Euro-II compliant AC version of the Maruti 800 is currently priced at Rs 2.27 lakh, and the non-AC variant priced at Rs 2.07 lakh.

The Alto has grown at a rapid 135 per cent in the last fiscal, selling 60,629 units. In fact, ever since the price reduction a few months back, the Alto is believed to have become Maruti's largest selling compact car overtaking the Zen and the WagonR.

Alto currently comes in three variants. These include Alto Lx (Rs 2.65 lakh), Alto LXi (Rs 2.85 lakh) and Alto VXi (Rs 3.66 lakh).
