Foreign Trade Indo-Japan Centre makeover Our Bureau
CHENNAI: Chennai's Indo-Japan Centre, a non-profit organisation to promote goodwill between the countries, has transformed itself into a full-fledged chamber of commerce and industry to better serve the growing opportunities in bilateral trade. At a press conference on Friday, the chamber's Secretary-General Prof N. Krishnaswami said the centre had changed itself to Indo-Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry on March 31. A press release issued by the chamber said that its new role would cover consultancy, investment promotion and business facilitation between Japan and India. Prof Krishnaswami and the Chamber's President Mr R. Veeramani were optimistic about the future of bilateral trade between India and Japan. Mr R. Veeramani said the information technology sector in Japan provided significant business opportunities for Indian companies. He, however, added that ignorance of Japanese language could prove a barrier for Indian companies. Mr Veeramani said ambiguities in Indian labour laws and delays in implementing projects were issues that troubled Japanese investors. Improvement in infrastructure was another issue in this context, he said.
