BHEL research backing for AP power projects

Hyderabad , April 9

IN the power sector development of Andhra Pradesh, the corporate research and development (R&D) of BHEL, is playing an increasingly bigger role in supply of indigenous equipment, support systems and improving operational efficiencies.

The BHEL (R&D) has recently provided training simulators to the thermal power plant in Vijayawada. In addition, two gravimetric feeder control systems, which mark the indigenisation of power plant control systems, have been supplied to the same plant.

Similarly, a custom-designed PADO (performance analysis, diagnosis and optimisation) software package, which can enhance the operational capabilities of the plant as well as carry out diagnostics, is to be implemented at National Thermal Power Corporation's (NTPC) thermal power plant at Ramagundam, according to the BHEL (R&D), annual performance review presented by its Executive Director, Mr S. Balagurunathan.

With the Andhra Pradesh Transmission and Generation Corporations - APTransco and APGenco, BHEL (R&D) has forged strong ties. The 145 kV class SF6 circuit breaker with insulated nozzle, a patented product from the R&D, which optimises energy level of the operating machines, has been commissioned at the Shapurnagar sub-station of APTransco.

In the transmission and distribution of power, the R&D has developed a 145 kV GIS (gas insulated sub-station), which has been type tested at the CESI laboratories, Italy. This system has been operationalised at the Ramachandrapuram sub-station of APTransco, the review said.

On the field support services, in which the R&D has considerable expertise and facilities, the APGenco has entrusted the task of vibration assessment of seven of its hydro power stations.

Accordingly, BHEL (R&D) will undertake life extension studies at the Lower Sileru, Donkarai and Upper Sileru hydro power stations, to find ways of prolonging their life.

The other projects that the R&D has obtained in AP include the life extension assessment studies on a one MW gas turbine compressor of the Indian Navy at INS Ekasila in Visakhapatnam and development of customised software packages for the thermal plants at Simhadri and Ramagundam of NTPC.
