St Joseph's College to set up rural, urban research chairs

Our Bureau

Bangalore , April 12

ST. JOSEPH'S College of Business Administration will be setting up two research chairs in urban and rural management.

The chair in urban management will be sponsored by Mr T.P.G. Nambiar, Chairman of BPL group of companies, while rural management will have contribution from Mr Mohandas Pai, Director & CFO, Infosys Technologies. The new programme will be formally launched on Wednesday by Mr Jayakar Jerome, Commissioner of Bangalore Development Authority (BDA).

Explaining about the objectives of setting up the chairs, a college spokesman said the chair in urban management would provide a hub for professionals, Government officials, academics and students to enhance their knowledge and skills in urban management and urban planning. It will also help to create new system for sustainable city services.

The forum on rural management seeks to establish a centre of excellence for education, research, consultancy, advocacy through professional approach to learning and action in partnership with practitioners, academics, Government agencies, NGOs and community based organisations.

With a transition witnessed lately from rural to a more heavily urban character of the economy, rural-urban partnership has assumed importance to remove the imbalance in the development process.

Urban and rural areas are a continuum — urban growth can be a catalyst for rural economic activities. Rural areas also can gain when they are integrally linked in development process.

The college has also planned to organise a seminar on rural-urban partnership, which is gaining newer recognition, in June.
