Four States shortlisted for Rs 200-cr third plant: Munjal

Our Bureau

HERO Honda has short-listed four States for setting up its third manufacturing plant in the country.

According to Mr Brijmohan Lall Munjal, Chairman, Hero Honda Motors, the four States are Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra, and a decision on the location would be taken after the elections.

"We have earmarked an investment of Rs 200 crore towards the new facility, which would have a capacity of about 2,00,000-2,50,000 units," he said.

The company's current two facilities at Haryana are believed to be running at peak production levels.

Foray into scooters market: Meanwhile, Mr Munjal said that the company would be looking to make a foray into the scooters market in the coming years. Hero Honda's agreement with Honda on the former not entering the scooters category expires in 2004.

Similarly, the agreement stipulated that Honda's 100 per cent subsidiary in India would not enter the bike market.

Honda Motorcycles and Scooters India (HMSI) too is planning to launch a motor cycle around September this year. Meanwhile, Hero Honda is likely to launch two new bike models in the economy segment in the second half of the year, one of which will be on a new platform that the company is developing.
