Ikanos in talks with telecom players

Bangalore , April 14

IKANOS Solutions has announced the opening of its India development centre at Bangalore with plans to include software and product development activities in India.

The company expects to have 60 staff on board by the end of the year. It will also focus on the Indian market with its range of fibre extension technologies.

Mr Richard Sekar, Vice-President (Marketing), said that the company was in talks with the major Indian telecom service providers and equipment manufacturers about its programmable chipsets that will enable carriers to deliver 100 mbps to the consumer at a fraction of the cost of fibre-connectivity.

There are expected to be 251 million broadband subscriptions across the world by 2005.

"Considering the billions of dollars invested in establishing an optical backbone network, carriers would be interested in our technologies as they enable up to 100 mbps connectivity over the existing copper cable itself," said Mr Sekar.

That will bring down costs by a 100-1,000 times compared to connecting with fibre, he added.

"For instance, fibre connectivity costs $14,000 in the US per month while a carrier who deploys our technology can offer it at $200 per month."

The Ikanos family of chipsets is designed to integrate into optical line terminals and optical network units to extend fibre-based services from the curb of multi-tenant dwelling unit basement directly to the subscriber premise.
